Jul 29 - New Weekly Limits Coming
So this is finally here, huh?
Anthropic sent out emails and also made an official post on Reddit at r/ClaudeAI
. In this email, they’re notifying users that they will put a new overall weekly limit in place, as well as an Opus 4-specific weekly limit, effective on August 28.
So, I’m a Max 20× subscriber and I generally use 2-3 sessions per day (not always to the full 5 hours, but mostly with Opus), and based on my iOS screen time statistics, I spend ~35 hours on VS Code, so I should be safe (it says 24-40 hours of Opus 4 per week). I’m okay with using Sonnet 4 if Opus 4 made plans but that’s obviously not ideal.
Now, I am concerned about burst usage — sometimes I am guilty of running 2-3 concurrent terminals with Opus 4, and most recently I’m doing simultaneous frontend and backend development. And you know TypeScript — it burns a lot more tokens than Python! But hopefully that won’t be an issue.
I’d like to specifically mention the part about “account sharing and reselling access”.
Yes, that is actually a real thing. I’ve personally noticed the trend on Chinese social media, and there is very little anyone can do to stop those random “mirror sites” that are scammers at best or system abusers at worst. I’ve checked in on several GH repos and I’ve not seen those relay service code taken down either. However, the new limits should help curb these scammers from running account sharing services and making profits from being the middleware.
A lot of Redditors are reacting to this but rightfully so. I’m personally staying and I hope that the fact that some of the users becoming decentivized from excessive usage or even leaving could ease the service pressure. What Anthropic has done right in this case is that they’re simply informing / notifying, and they also let users know that they can unsubscribe.
The communication here offers tremendously more clarity and is more unequivocal, and it’s what Cursor should’ve done.
Jul 18 - Service Quality Appears Restored
Okay so let me get this off my chest first. Today I committed a stupid sin: when I was trying to download from UniProt’s FTP server (for this one 23GB zip file for ID mappings), because my internet speed was insufferable, I tried using VPN and accidentally sent a message on Claude Desktop. I noticed how Claude didn’t respond immediately (the logo didn’t even start animating) so I quit Claude and the VPN before attempting to access Claude again. When I returned, the chat loaded and I haven’t been hit with an instant account ban. I know how strict Anthropic is with this and I was careless. Praying to Anthropic God that my account won’t be affected lol.
